TREASURER'S REPORT Checking balance $2841.67 Money market balance $2037.49 Discussed: sources of income, possibility of grants, advisability of money market Approved (Nancy moved, Jill seconded)

NEWSLETTER Heather has disk with template and is ready to do first issue Deadline for information: October 1 (Paul is to put announcement on Web site) Frequency: every 2 months - August, October, December, February, April, June, August (Mary moved, Nancy seconded) Content: president's message, article on Las Vegas (Imogene was suggested to write), pictures at Convention (Al Vreeland), reminder to pay dues, TFC membership form Inclusion of membership roster: Dec. issue Inclusion of commercial members: if they paid last year they can be in October issue Redesign suggested: compare other flute clubs' newsletters for inspiration, upgrade our image, look more professional, include pictures (not October issue though) Mailing person: check with Pat Spoonamore

OLD BUSINESS

Lorraine wants a small get-together to bring history books up to date, will organize at Sandy's

NEW BUSINESS

Ali Ryerson Concert 7 p.m. October 2, Holsclaw, $10 adults/$8 seniors/$6 students TFC is credited as cosponsoring, in return Nancy would like our attendance and help with spreading the word UA flyer will be sent to flute club, jazz society Sandy volunteered to make postcard in the meantime plugging both Nancy's recital September 17 and Ryerson concert, mail it to flute club and jazz society, and have copies for people to pass out to other organizations they play in. Nancy offered to reimburse the costs from the UA flute fund

U of A Flute Festival

February 21 (and 22)

Budget

Nancy passed around proposed budget asking for additions and suggestions Nancy is trying to get UA to reimburse travel expenses. Right now also have a Brannen-Cooper grant and an Altus grant Main budget question is William Bennett for 2 days or 1 ($1750 each day). Nancy suggested masterclass and recital on Saturday (9-4, recital at 7:30), Sunday masterclass (1-5) on 24 Studies. Sandy suggested some of his second day be reimbursed through private lessons, Nancy will check with his manager. She will submit grant proposal assuming he will do 2 days, can still be changed later

Exhibitors

Phil Swanson is in charge (both Sandy and Nancy plugged at NFA Convention) Fee will be raised this year Nancy hopes to fill two rooms Have exhibitors stay open until 5 on Saturday

Publicity

February-March is "flute month" with Nakai, Flute Festival, and Galway Newspapers are more likely to publicize TFC events than UA events, so TFC will promote the evening concert Attendees from other places

Other Activities

Nancy suggested Viviana Cuplido (new TSO principal) to lead off festival, everyone agreed Asked for other suggestions for activities for festival

Other TFC Activities for 2003-2004

Problem of attracting audiences discussed - expense of bringing in artists, embarrassment of not drawing an audience Talked about sponsoring smaller things, using local talent Brainstormed activities for members who don't play in ensembles (Sue will try to get feedback from other members who don't play in ensemble) concert closed to public

Web Site

It was agreed that the Web site is complete and up-to-date in terms of containing relevant information Paul (Webmaster) was commended on being responsive and thorough with corrections, changes, and updates Some feelings were expressed regarding updating our Web image, making the site less utilitarian It was suggested to look at other flute club Web sites for ideas

Next steps: ascertain from Paul where his interests lie in upgrading site design, identify others to help with site redesign

MEMBERSHIP REPORT (This was before I got there).

UA FLUTE FESTIVAL Potential Visa problem for Bennett Brochure is in progress (UA wanted to do postcard; not enough info on postcard). There will be a mailing party on 12/14 after the concert (potluck at Sandy's). Mass emailing in progress Prices: group rate suggested; price tier? Preregistration and at the door. TFC will handle mechanics of audition process (for Sunday masterclass) so we can refund to those who don't get in. Sue will write article about Flute Month for TFC, AFS newsletter, and newspapers Nancy do 24 Studies workshop in January (Jan 28th)

TFC INCOME Problem with outgo (too much -- more than income) TFC can't get financial benefit from flute fund (where flute festival income goes) so will benefit by UA bringing in people with the flute fund money Dental insurance deal: Jill will produce more information Sell concert CDs Raise gig price (Sandy will poll Board and come up with fair price)
